Easy One-Bowl Challah Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (not hot)

  • 2 teaspoons dry yeast

  • ¼ cup sugar

  • ¼ cup oil (canola or vegetable)

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour

Optional topping

  • 1 egg, for egg wash

  • Sesame or poppy seeds


Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the warm water, yeast, and sugar.
    Let sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.

  2. Add the oil, egg, and salt. Mix well.

  3. Gradually add the flour until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.

  4. Knead right in the bowl (or on the counter) for 5–7 minutes, until smooth.

  5. Cover and let rise for 1–1½ hours, until doubled.

  6. Shape into a braid or a simple round loaf.

  7. Place on a lined baking tray, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.

  8. Brush with egg wash, add seeds if you like.

  9. Bake at 180°C / 350°F for 25–30 minutes, until golden.
